Biofuels Mandate

Caltex supports Australian government policy to increase the use of biofuels. Over 400 Caltex branded retail sites currently supply biofuel blends to customers across eastern Australia.  This includes Bio E10 Unleaded petrol, and B2 and B5 biodiesel blends.

Caltex Bio E10 Unleaded is a unique blend of Caltex Unleaded 91 Octane with 10% sugar or grain based ethanol. Our biodiesel blends, New Generation Diesel (B2) and B5 consist of used cooking oil, canola oil and tallow blended with diesel.

We believe biofuels have the potential to play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gases and help provide long- term solutions to climate change.  That's why we are a leading supplier of biofuels to Australian motorists today.

At the same time, we are taking all reasonable steps in order to meet the New South Wales Government's ethanol mandate, which currently requires 4% of the volume of unleaded petrol sold in the state to be E10. This will progress to the replacement of all regular unleaded petrol in NSW with E10 by July 2011. A 2% biodiesel mandate, rising to 5% as supply becomes available has also been legislated.
The Queensland Government looks like it will follow-suit. It has recently drafted legislation which will introduce an ethanol mandate requiring a minimum ethanol blend of 5% to be sold throughout Queensland in place of regular unleaded petrol. Caltex is currently introducing E10 to service stations across Queensland in readiness for this legislation.

Caltex remains committed to sourcing biofuels produced sustainably. At the same time we are monitoring the debate that centres on using land and crops for fuel rather than food.

Caltex prefers to support Australian farmers and industry; favouring biofuels produced from locally grown feedstocks. Australian biofuels producers use waste and by-products, or have developed co-production processes that generate both food and fuel. It's also worth knowing that palm oil is not produced in Australia and Caltex does not use biodiesel produced from imported palm oil feedstocks.
